What is NHS?
Membership in the National Honor Society (NHS) is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a high school student. Our chapter has worked hard to bring the accomplishments of outstanding students to the attention of parents, teachers, peers and the community. Our chapter strives to give practical meaning to the Society's standards of scholarship, service, leadership and character. These four ideals are considered as the basis for selection. No student is inducted simply because of a high academic average. The National Honor Society strives to recognize the total student - one who excels in all of these areas. The standards used for selection are as follows.
Scholarship
A student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.65 or higher in order be inducted in the National Honor Society. Students who drop below that GPA will be put on probation for one semester. Failure to improve at the semester mark will result in the student being removed from the group.
Leadership, Service and Character
These qualities are demonstrated by student activities and teacher evaluations. To be inducted, students must complete an essay on service to others. Students must also get two signatures of recommendation vouching for their character.
Membership Requirements
Membership is more than an honor. It is an ongoing responsibility and an obligation to continue to demonstrate those outstanding qualities that result in a student's selection. Membership also carries a responsibility to the chapter. If our NHS chapter is to be effective and meaningful, each member must become involved.
- Attend all meetings, held the first Wednesday of every month. If you cannot attend, you must approve your absence and then attend a makeup meeting on Thursday after school. Missing a meeting will result in you being put on probation for the rest of the school year. Missing another meeting during your probation will result in your removal from the group.
- Participate in at least two NHS events during the year.
- Complete a minimum of 20 service hours.
- Pay dues: $20 yearly
