Required Parent Notification

Under No Child Left Behind(NCLB) Act of 2001, parents of students attending Title I schools are required to be notified of certain provisions and standings of schools, teachers, and opportunities to participate. Kindergarten Parent Notification

The Michigan Department of Education recently updated several sections of the Pupil Accounting Manual. Of particular interest to Michigan School Districts is the update on the absence of parent notification deadlines related to the Kindergarten Age requirements.

Kindergarten Age Requirement:

Section 6 of the State School Aid Act (MCL 388.1606) allows membership to be counted if the pupil meets the minimum age requirement to be eligible to attend school for that school year under Section 1147. However, if a pupil does not meet the minimum age requirement under Section 1147, a recent amendment to Section 6(4)(l)(iii) allows a district to count the child in membership for that school year if the child will be 5 years of age not later than December 1 of that school year and the parent or legal guardian has notified the district in writing that he or she intends to enroll the child in kindergarten for that school year.
